Lenten Fare (2008)

Wednesday of this week is Ash Wednesday, the day Catholics across the world attend Mass and begin the penitential season of Lent. And while Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation and the reception of the ashes is not a sacrament, the day and the act are important ones in the liturgical year.

To begin the season of Lent, Catholics fast and abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday (and abstain from meat on Lenten Fridays) and often commit to a sacrifice or act that serves as a way of deepening their faith during Lent’s 40 days. The Catholic observance of Ash Wednesday is confusing to some of our Christian brothers and sisters. The church signs below explain the day–and the season of Lent–in their own way.

  • Funny as always.

  • excellent.

I have a couple folks in RCIA this year that need to read this

  • I loved it! What a way to ecumenical, with love
    and humor.

  • Are you kidding me? Why engage, stick to the truth. Does anyone want to ponder the fact that Jesus did not want division within His Church? The Church He established upon Peter the Rock, Paul and all the apostles Cor 1:10-17. Does anyone ponder the fact that how could God go aganist His very commandment of “Thou shall not commit adultery? and fornicate against His very Bride, The Catholic Church. One Chruch has been established by God Himself, and the other has been created by the arch deceiver. Wake-up people.

  • Hallelujah! I am a baptized and confirmed Roman Catholic who is also “born again”. That is what baptism is all about and confirmation confirms that fact. For those who think we don’t exist, there are multi millions of us in the world. Being baptized in the Holy Spirit for us, is just a release of the spiritual gifts we received in baptism. Tomorrow I will attend Mass and get ashes put on my forehead to remind me that I am not perfect and must repent on a daily basis in my heart(including occasional confession). That is my preparation for remember Good Friday, when Jesus died for those sins.

  • Amen, Revamarie, amen!

  • Revamarie, Anita, and Jason. This exchange between virtual church signs does not state or imply that division in the Bride of Christ is either acceptable or desirable. It is, of course, deplorable. And this post is a teaching tool to promote the teachings of Holy Mother Church. And Anita, nothing in the church sign conversation derides converts (from wherever they may have come) to the Catholic church.

  • Wolftracker, thank you.
Speaking of teachings of THE Church, check out the Council of Trent (and the Catechism of Trent) and Quo Primum when you can, please.

  • I LOVE this! Creative, witty, and a loving lesson in truth.
    Amen!

  • Nicely done, my friend.

Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, MAXIMA Mea Culpa.

Keep up the good work, and have miserable Lent!

  • That is have “A” miserable Lent!

I can tell it’s coming…. the work load is heavier, and the tempers are shorter…..

“Don’t forget that you are a… dust-bin. That’s why if by any chance the divine Gardener lays his hands on you, and scrubs and cleans you, and fills you with magnificent flowers, neither the scent nor the colour that embellish your ugliness should make you proud.

Humble yourself: don’t you know that you are the rubbish bin?”
St. Jose Maria Escriva in “The Way”

  • Revamarie - When you say, “the other has been created by the arch deceiver” are you refering to the Baptists? The Pentacostals? Or all churches not Catholic? Please clarify.

  • Cleverly done. Well done indeed.

  • Sometimes I forget I am dust, but it doesn’t change the fact. Sometimes I forget the truth, but that doesn’t change the truth. The only reason to be Catholic is that it is true and absolute fact confirmed by faith..

  • Always curious why many religious organisation thinks they are the only way to God when it will be our Christ who decides.

Perhaps that would be an interesting discussion for those members of religious organisations that were reject by God and thrown into hell.

    Matthew 7:21-23 NIV
21″Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

  • I heard of a preacher that started teaching his flock there is NO Hell but the one we create for ourselves while here on earth. He lost his followers and everything of material value, but found the key to truly being worthy of Gods love. If I’m not mistaken JESUS died on the cross and went through Hell so we wont have to! God bless everyone and start living!

  • Doe Spirit: Respectfully, Jesus did not preach that there was no hell other than what one might create on earth. He quite clearly preached of an otherworldly hell on many occasions.

    Not Funny at All.

  • Thank you, Father Ilgenfritz, but so KCC readers are not confused by your comment or your appellation, you are an Anglican priest, not a Catholic one, if I am not mistaken by a google search of your name.

  • The only Church that can trace its beginning directly back to Christ Himself is the Catholic Church–THE Church of Christ.

  • The Orthodox fast from meat on Wednesdays and Fridays and during all of Lent.

  • Jason & other orthodox: “I was so much older then; I’m younger than that now.” - Dylan
Do you really believe that you honor the Lord with your concrete attitudes about the Church? I believe that the Catholic Church was instituted by Christ and that he appointed Peter as its first head, and I believe in apostolic succession, but I don’t hit people over the head with it. For God’s sake, for the sake of His Church, and for the love of Jesus, please remember that we are to be salt, to season our speech with love so that others thirst for knowing more about what we hold to be true. We are not ever called to be sledgehammers to smash or fire hoses to drown others with our message. Chill out please, and pray before you speak, at least before you speak on behalf of what we both hold to be true.

  • I love to see the churches have such a public and sweet-spirited dialogue. Thank you for a great blog entry.

  • very funny

  • These churches must be located opposite or kitty-corner to each other with such active marque-interaction. Who changes them that often? How can the message possibly get across to anyone? How strange it must be to those who pass-by!!! Maybe these people can walk across the street & have a real conversation with a cup of coffee. I too find it “not funny”.

  • I found the messages to be excellent. What a great way understand we are all answering to Christ!!

  • It’s amazing how people can turn what looks like a good-faith effort into something to get hissy about. THIS is ecumenicism?

Lighten up! We’re all God’s creatures, and the Creator didn’t make junk.

The Savior Jesus Christ said, “You will see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom…….” He is the Way, and we do not have to make exclusionary rules for Him. He knows what He is doing, and we do not, though we may occasionally get a clue. The Good News remains the Good News, regardless of what rules we may have deduced concerning it. Have a cleansing Lent!

  • These signs are generated on-line. The signs only exist in cyberspace. This banter between churches never happened as portrayed in this article. Churchsigngenerator.com.
    Have a blessed Ash Wednesday.

  • Thank you, Eileen. each church sign does contain the url you mention. It is always interesting how many do not see the obvious.

  • [...] Happy Lent February 6, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized — piccari @ 1:45 pm This blog has a very funny way of explaining lent, it’s worth reading: http://kansascitycatholic.wordpress.com/2008/02/04/lenten-fare-2008/ [...]

  • That was hilarious…and accurate with the confusion between the churches.

  • Revamarie, do you not remember Matthew 25:14-30? The story of the talents; how the master gave his servants 5, 2 and 1 talent? God gives us gifts that he sees fit for us. And we have to use them according to God’s will and give Him back as many fold as we can. One of the gifts that He gives to many of us, is that of being a part of the church that He created; the Catholic Church. Yes, it was the sin of pride that caused many to leave the church that Jesus built. But God still loves them and God gives our protestant brothers and sisters and those of other faiths (through no fault of their own) the gifts that they need to get to Heaven. It is a tougher road, yes indeed! But it is obtainable for them. And many Christian protestant churches have some of the gifts (sacraments) that Jesus gave to the Catholic Church, (e.g. baptism and marriage). They just do not have all of them. As a Catholic, I am more culpable for what I do in the name of faith because I should know better. That doesn’t necessarily mean I know better than our Christian protestant brothers and sisters. It means I should know better because I have the access to more of the truth because of the added gifts (sacraments) that God has bestowed on the Catholic Church. And, it is our duty to be witnesses to the fullness of the truth (to engage) to all people from all walks of life. This is the most important way we can give back the talents God gave us; a thousand times over. Bottom line we cannot and should not shun our protestant friends, or anyone for that matter that we can bring as far to the fullness of truth that they are able to go. If we do not engage, we are no better than the foolish servant who buried his talent in the dirt.

  • It is good to see the Holy Spirit at work in all of these Churches dedicated to bringing the Word of God to His holy (and not so holy) people!

  • if you read the new testament - which pre-dated the “catholic church” - you will all see that you must be spiritually born-again according to john 3:16..no one gave the peter and the catholics or luther and lutherans and wesley and wesleyans and the paul and the “paulians “=) dominion or superiority over each other sect..you just may be surprised to see that the beggar, homosexual, orphan, widow, ailing people and family we never visit, etcin we pass by and ignore may be helping jesus and peter guard the gate and when jesus asks did he help you, because helping you helps the father, etc.. DID YOU….that is key to the Kingdom

  • I really liked that sign thing. I grew up protestant evangelical. But I really appreciate a lot of Roman Catholic tradition and I am observing lent for the very time this year. A couple weeks ago my church observed ash Wednesday and it was very powerful. I honestly don’t see a huge separation between the two churches theologically and also in other ways I believe the gap in narrowing all the time. I believe the true church is made up of all true Christ Followers from every religion - that is the Holy catholic church. When I recite the Apostle’s Creed I love the part about the Holy catholic church because it talks about the true body of Christ from every tradition.
